A roof over head looks at what is involved with renting or purchasing a house. The workshop also considers some of the pros and cons of buying compared to renting.

The workshops include:

  • Tenancy - looks at some of the issues that need to be considered when deciding to rent accommodation. The cost of renting both independently and through share arrangements are covered as well as some of the basic rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords under a tenancy agreement. The workshop also considers some of the pros and cons of renting compared to buying.
  • Home ownership - looks at some of the major steps involved in purchasing a house. The advantages and disadvantages of buying either a new or an established home are considered as well as different finance options. The costs associated with purchasing a home such as conveyancing and connection to utilities are covered, as well as information about the contract of sale, settlement and body corporate obligations.
